A study by Sharpe Partners, an interactive marketing agency,
revealed that 89% of adult Internet users in America share
content with others via e-mail. This is excellent news for
those companies who use self-propelling word-of-mouse
e-mail techniques to sell their products.
The study generated some interesting results regarding
the type of content that is most often forwarded, as well.
The most popular content is humorous material.
The second most popular category is news, followed by healthcare
and medical information, religious and spiritual material, games,
business and personal finance information and sports/hobbies ...
in that order. So it is easy to see that humor is the best content
for your viral e-mail campaign.
Cartoons, jokes and funny video clips are among the things
that can be added to an e-mail to insure that it will go viral.
People will want to pass along something that makes them laugh.
They are a lot more likely to hit the forward button and send
your email to their friends and relatives if it is an
advertainment rather than an advertisement.
Not along ago, about 35 million people got an e-mail containing
a picture taken in Disneyland. It took a minute to see it but
there was Donald Duck lying prone in front of the famous
Cinderella Castle. The title of the picture was
Bird Flu has hit Disneyland. It was a viral e-mail advertising
Disneyland and used the edgy strategy of making light of whatâ?Ts
serious, and it works.
I'd guess that most people who own a computer have seen that
picture, and thus the advertisement for Disneyland. The bird flu
epidemic is newsworthy and has the potential to attract an
enormous amount of attention to any brand that might,
for whatever reason, associate itself with it.
Remember that people are much more likely to share a joke
or a funny picture than anything else so you would be well
advised to include humor in your e-mail campaign.

have no choice but to overcome your inhibitions and come
out of your shell. If you really want to market your
business effectively, you need to personally speak up for
it. You need to sound convincing and not shy as you expound
on the many wonderful features and benefits of what you're
offering. You need to be assertive and not hesitant as you
encourage people to avail of what you're offering.
Make Your Target Market Your Family *** In normal instances,
a family member is sure to be privy to ALL his family's
secrets - good or bad. Business-wise, however, you need
to think of your target market as your family as well.
You need to know everything about what they like and
dislike. You need to know them so well you can almost
perfectly second guess how they'd re-act in a given
situation. By making your target market your family,
you'll gradually learn which buttons to push to make
your customers continue patronizing your company's
products or services.
Use Ethical Means In Marketing *** Above all, avoid using
illegal or deceptive methods when marketing. Don't be
tempted with the get-rich-quick-schemes because these won't
work for you in the long run and can cause your company to
dissolve or go bankrupt. If you want your company to be
successful, you need to love and respect your customers.
Focus On Benefits...Not Features *** This is THE rule of
thumb when marketing. If you're creating an ad campaign or
formulating a marketing strategy... make sure you remember
to focus on the benefits and not the features of your
product or service. Customers will always remember how
their life - directly or indirectly - will be made easier
by what you're offering than how your product or service
works or what hi-tech options it offers.
Money Is Not All That Matters *** Many business owners make
the mistake of thinking a big and flashy marketing campaign
is the best way to catch its market's attention. And yes,
of course, an expensive ad may capture your market's notice
- but the real question is will it be able to retain it
long enough to convince them to buy what you're offering?
Always remember that cost, although certainly important,
is not the ultimate deciding factor when devising your
marketing strategy.
Lastly, don't forget to evaluate the results of your
marketing strategy because there's always something
to learn from past success and failures.
